LETCHWORTH, UK: Blaze Entertainment has today announced the Broken Sword Collection, bringing Revolution Software’s celebrated Broken Sword adventures to the Evercade cartridge library with the first entries in the franchise combined on an Evercade cartridge.

This collection brings together two of the most beloved point-and-click adventure games: Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars and its sequel, Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror. These critically acclaimed titles, known for their engrossing narratives, memorable characters, and stunning visuals, continue to enthral players.

For the first time, fans can experience these original 32-bit timeless console classics on a single physical cartridge, made possible by the Evercade’s Giga Cart format, allowing for more complex and larger games on the same iconic cartridge design.

The Broken Sword Collection will be released in February 2025, with pre-orders opening on January 30, 2025, for £24.99, $29.99, and €29.99.

Originally released in 1996 and 1997, Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars and Broken Sword II: The Smoking Mirror set a gold standard for the adventure genre with their intricate puzzles, captivating stories, and deep gameplay. With themes of mystery, history, and intrigue, these titles continue to captivate fans nearly three decades after their debut.

This release reinforces Blaze Entertainment’s commitment to bringing classic, critically-acclaimed retro games to the Evercade ecosystem. The collection is compatible with all Evercade systems, including the handheld EXP-R, VS-R home console, the new bartop-sized Evercade Alpha arcade machines, and the HyperMegaTech! Super Pocket handhelds.

Like all Evercade cartridge collections, the Broken Sword Collection comes in a numbered plastic clamshell case and includes a full-colour manual offering rich details about both games, their storylines, and their gameplay mechanics.

The launch of this collection joins Blaze Entertainment’s growing catalogue of over 500 games spanning decades of gaming history, continuing to delight retro enthusiasts and collectors alike.

“We’re delighted to bring such an incredible series to Evercade fans with Broken Sword,” said Blaze Entertainment CEO, Andrew Byatt. “Our platform is a great way to rediscover classic titles, or to play them for the first time. Being able to play both of these excellent adventure games on one physical cartridge is a treat for all – fans and new discoverers alike.”

"I am so proud that Broken Sword adventures have remained so popular and built such a passionate following," said Revolution Software CEO, Charles Cecil MBE. "So I am thrilled that these games can now be played again on Evercade systems in the same way as they were originally released - something only possible again after 20 years."

Notes
Evercade was first released in 2020 as a handheld device with ten gaming cartridges of classic console licenses. Since then, it has grown to several other hardware devices (listed below) and now has over 50 physical cartridge collections and more than 500 games across the entire ecosystem.
The Evercade EXP-R handheld gaming system is available globally and includes the Tomb Raider Collection 1 cartridge.
The Evercade VS-R home console system is currently available worldwide from Amazon and other local retailers. It includes the Tomb Raider Collection 1 cartridge.
The Evercade Alpha bartop arcade systems are available globally, and each come with 6 built-in Capcom games and competition-grade arcade controls, plus full compatibility with all Evercade cartridges.
Evercade devices play games via emulation on bespoke cartridges. These physical releases come in a classic clamshell case with a full-colour manual, custom written by Blaze with controls, hints and tips, and interesting facts about the titles and developers.
Evercade emulates a wide range of systems (including 8, 16, 32 and 64-bit console, handhelds, THEC64 and Amiga home computers, plus arcade games), as well as natively run games. It also highlights modern retro games created by indie developers, with support for five decades of gaming.
Evercade cartridges have three distinct colour schemes to highlight their content. Red-coloured boxes feature home console collections from multiple systems across five decades of gaming. Purple indicates Arcade game collections, and Blue is for home computer collections.
In 2023, Blaze Entertainment launched its new brand HyperMegaTech! to provide more retro gaming products aimed at a more casual market. Its first four products, the Super Pocket handheld gaming devices, also come with Evercade cartridge compatibility.

About Revolution Software

Founded in 1990, Revolution Software Limited is a world-leading developer / publisher of narrative-driven adventure games.
The company is a pioneer of digital self-publishing: titles such as cult classic cyber-punk adventure Beneath a Steel Sky; and the multi-million selling Broken Sword series, first released in 1996, which has earned over $100 million at retail.
In 2020 the company released Beyond a Steel Sky, written in partnership with graphic novel artist Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), which was commissioned by Apple as a lead title for Apple Arcade. Translated into 14 languages, Revolution subsequently self-published the title on all other platforms.
In 2024, Revolution released a substantially enhanced version of the first Broken Sword, Broken Sword – Shadow of the Templars: Reforged in 4K. All the animated sprites were redrawn and their animations improved; where original line art existed, backgrounds were digitally repainted; where available, audio was remastered from the original assets; and speech files were enhanced using AI tools. A ‘Story mode’ subtly nudges the player when the game determines that they are beginning to get frustrated with any puzzle. Currently the game’s Metacritic score on PS5 sits at 89%.
The company continues to evolve and redefine the adventure genre for a broad and diverse audience.
