- The Bundesliga 2020 Champion and Sorare, the global fantasy football game, have signed a partnership to create digital collectibles of FC Bayern Munich players
- FC Bayern Munich is Sorare's 3rd club in the Bundesliga. 100 clubs have joined Sorare including Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atletico de Madrid.
- After being backed by World Cup Champion Andre Schurrle, Germany ranks 4th in terms of the total number of Sorare users, and number three in terms of total time spent on the platform per user, a reflection of the country’s appetite for Fantasy Football
Berlin, November 10th, 2020 - FC Bayern Munich announces today a partnership with global Fantasy Football platform Sorare, allowing collectors and gamers in Germany and globally to freely buy, sell, and play with limited edition digital player cards from the team, such as Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, and Robert Lewandowski. Since the launch of its open beta in December 2019, Sorare has grown an average of 52% month on month, and today counts over 45.000 users worldwide with a card trading volume of over $1.000.000 per month in October 2020.
Football fans have been collecting and trading player cards in the physical world for decades. Football teams from across the world have increasingly been looking for digital solutions to engage with fans online, giving them new ways to interact with their favorite teams and players. Sorare’s fantasy football game is built with a new class of collectibles: officially-licensed digital cards. The platform enables users to play fantasy football with skin in the game, as they can truly own and trade their digital player cards.
FC Bayern Munich is at the forefront of innovation and is always looking to offer fans new experiences. The club shares Sorare’s vision to become the go-to fantasy game to increase the enjoyment of live football. The game will help FC Bayern Munich to reach out to new, young communities, especially in Asia and America where Sorare has a strong user base. Bayern Munich fans all around the world will be able to play with their favorite footballers by using their cards in their team. The score of the player card will depend on the performance of the player in real-life, would it be a Bundesliga game or a Champions League game.
Nicolas Julia, CEO at Sorare, said: “Today’s news is another major milestone for Sorare. With the inclusion of FC Bayern Munich to the platform, Sorare now boasts three of the top 5 European Champions with Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, making the game ever more relevant to football aficionados around the globe. FC Bayern Munich fans will be able to join the economy of their passions in a way that wasn’t possible before Sorare’s global fantasy football platform.“
The company is using the Ethereum blockchain to create digital scarcity and establish who owns the digital card of a player at any given time. It creates a new level of trust and freedom for collectors. Sorare has built an online marketplace where users can freely buy and sell scarce digital cards representing football players. But the cards are more than just collectibles: they are useful in Sorare’s global fantasy football game to compete every weekend and fight for the best rewards.
Andre Schurrle, early investor in Sorare, said: "As a former professional football player, and early backer of Sorare, today's addition of Bayern Munich to the Sorare platform, one of my home country’s major teams, strikes a personal chord for me. Sorare is based on the real performance of the players, and with the inclusion of FC Bayern Munich, users can now buy or exchange digital cards from one of the world’s top football teams. I support Sorare's mission to become the platform for fantasy football and today's announcement is further proof that the company is well-positioned to achieve its goal. ”
Bayern Munich is the 100th football club to join Sorare following others from Europe, the United States, and Asia which have partnered with Sorare to issue officially digital player cards, amongst them Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atletico de Madrid. Through these partnerships, Sorare is able to create the first truly global fantasy football experience. Fantasy players can create a lineup with a Ligue 1 midfielder such as Neymar, a Serie A striker such as Cristiano Ronaldo, a La Liga goalkeeper such as Jan Oblak, and a Bundesliga defender such as Sven Bender.
The game was launched in March 2019 by two experienced entrepreneurs, Nicolas Julia and Adrien Montfort, that saw the potential of blockchain technology to create a new category in the sports gaming industry. Sorare has generated USD 2.5 million of revenues from the sale of cards across 70 countries in just over 12 months. Sorare recently raised $4 million in seed funding and added its 100th club, Paris Saint-Germain to the platform last month.
