01 OCT 2021 - Today, developer Vertical Reach and publisher Armor Games Studios have announced that the hair-raising psychological thriller The Tartarus Key will launch on Nintendo Switch in 2022, alongside the previously announced PC version of the game.

This news arrives in celebration of the launch of a brand new demo for the game, available from today as part of Steam's Next Fest. The demo gives players their first chance to experience the twisted world of The Tartarus Key and its eerie manor setting.

To celebrate, Vertical Reach and Armor have produced an announcement trailer, featuring all-new gameplay footage, story and character reveals, and a first listen of the haunting soundtrack from composer Josie Brechner.

Inspired by classic thrillers such as Alone In The Dark, and with a nod towards escape-the-room puzzle games, The Tartarus Key drops players into the unfortunate shoes of Alex Young, a young woman who awakens to find herself locked inside a sprawling manor, seemingly under constant observation by a network of cameras.

However, it soon becomes clear that whoever is watching Alex from behind the lens is the least of her concerns in this house of tricks and shadows, and she’s not the only one being held captive. At the end of a portable radio is an unfamiliar voice, and the deeper Alex investigates, the stranger things become. Who—or what—lies at the heart of this mansion?

The Tartarus Key will serve up an engrossing, chilling horror experience without the use of jump scares, though there will be plenty to keep players on their toes. The team at Vertical Reach are dedicated to creating a game so atmospheric and macabre that players' blood will run cold as they turn every corner of its decaying mansion setting.

Kevin Colegate, co-founder of Vertical Reach said, "We're thrilled to be able to bring The Tartarus Key to the Nintendo Switch! We hope players will enjoy it bundled up from underneath their favourite blanket with the lights down low, or feeling the spooky vibes on the go!"

The Tartarus Key will launch in 2022 on PC via Steam and on Nintendo Switch via the eShop.

A demo is now available to play on Steam via the Next Fest, which runs from October 1st through 7th.

About The Tartarus Key

Delve deep into the darkness of a mysterious mansion and puzzle out a way to escape the horror that lies within. As Alex Young, you awaken to find yourself trapped in a dark room - and your only guide: a cynical voice on the other end of a portable radio. As you move from room to room, solving puzzles and rescuing others like yourself, team up with everyone from a self-important conspiracy theorist to a detective with secrets of her own. It quickly becomes apparent that there is something truly rotten lurking at the heart of this place. But who - or what - lurks in the shadows of this mansion, monitoring your every move?

Inspired by the look and feel of classic horror games, The Tartarus Key serves up a mystery filled with twists and turns, and more than a few deadly surprises. Rely on brains over brawn to help Alex survive, but beware - not everyone might make it out alive.

Features:
  • Escape a deadly mansion filled with dangerous traps, and rescue Alex’s fellow captives… or fail, and leave them to a grisly fate
  • Uncover three different endings, and dig to the heart of the mansion and the strange secrets it and your captors hold
  • Solve puzzles and challenges reminiscent of escape-the-room games in a variety of unsettling and bizarre scenarios
  • A tense, atmospheric adventure that relies on puzzles and plot instead of combat or chase sequences
