Carmel, IN – Dec 12, 2024 – Heroic Games Corporation announced today that they intend to launch their new PVE MMORPG for the PC, Ship of Heroes, during Q2 of 2025.
Ship of Heroes is a superhero sci-fi MMORPG set in the 25th century, with an original story. In this world, superheroes, magic, and advanced technology all coexist. You control a superhero of your creation aboard the Free Human Ship Justice, a 20-mile-long generation ship traveling the galaxy. Players start on the first ship level, which contains Apotheosis City, as well as the Engineering tunnels.
At launch, Ship of Heroes will provide a strong suite of game features: cutting-edge character creation and customization, intricate combat, voiced NPCs, crafting, an auction house and trading system, and over 200 customizable superpowers for players to enjoy. Each player-created character can be unique and can reflect the story that the player wants to tell.
Complex and unusual game mechanics keep the game varied, interesting, and challenging. Player housing, team and solo play, and scalable raids are also included in the game. “We said we would publish a complete MMORPG, and we plan to do so,” Casey McGeever, CEO of Heroic Games said. “We also have a pipeline of new features and expansions that we aim to publish over the next two years in the form of regular free updates.”
Players will not have to pay any additional download fees to access the new content during 2025 and 2026, and there are no current plans to change that pricing structure later. “Our model is one download fee, plus a monthly subscription, period. There are no loot boxes for gambling with real money. There are no microtransactions, nor any pay-to-win features. There is no cash shop - we don't even want to sell cosmetics, if we can avoid it,” McGeever added. “We're not obligated to maximize profits this quarter, or even this year, at the expense of the long-term. Instead, our model creates a level playing field that rewards experimentation and gradual learning. Players who are looking for a new online home will want to get in on the ground floor of SoH, because it's designed to keep a core audience engaged and having fun, either continuously or on and off, for many years to come."
Another feature that makes Ship of Heroes stand out is what the dev team calls positive community. The devs have built a much-requested system for real-time chat moderation. Players who violate the code of conduct, typically by spamming chat, harassing others, or hacking, can be warned, silenced in general chat, or even expelled from the game without a refund. While trolling and negative interactions cannot be completely suppressed, they can be reduced. Setting clear expectations and rules, then enforcing them consistently, will protect the vast majority of players from the noisy few who want to ruin everyone else's fun.
Heroic Games plans to take reasonable steps to keep the community positive. “We’d rather have lower revenues and a more positive community,” McGeever said. Chat moderation is one step in recreating the best parts of the golden age of MMORPGs.
Another part is seeing and joining large groups of players, on occasion. “There is a trend towards creating single-player games, adding minimal multiplayer support, and calling that an MMORPG. But if you never see a crowd of 40+ unique, human-controlled characters on the screen at once, you’re not really playing a traditional MMORPG. Even if the world is massive, the social aspect isn't. By this strict definition, few new MMORPGs are published each year. Ship of Heroes is the first new superhero MMORPG in 12 years.
Ship of Heroes uses the Unreal 4 engine and will launch solely on Steam. Expected launch is Q2, 2025. It is still possible to join the volunteer testing team if you want to see and influence the game's development.
