Gdańsk, Poland – December 20, 2021. Mechanistry has released the first large content patch for their beaver city builder Timberborn. To best encapsulate the update’s multiple selling points – scrap mining, vertical water pumping, new resources, additional attractions – the developers dubbed it “Update 1”. Celebrating this exercise in creativity, Timberborn Early Access is now available for the first time with a 20% discount as part of digital winter sales.
The feature trailer for Update 1 can be viewed here.
With Update 1, Timberborn expands its post-apocalyptic beaver production chains. Rich in scrap, underground human ruins are now scattered across drought-stricken maps, ready to be mined for metal. Beavers of the future smelt it and use it in advanced buildings such as the new mechanized water pump. This high-end structure allows the player to build dams and artificial reservoirs on elevated terrain, increasing the odds of the colony’s survival. Update 1 also adds new resources such as aquatic plants, new attractions including mud baths, and more.
The new content comes to Timberborn Early Access after a period of testing on the game’s experimental branch. Bartlomiej Dawidow, Timberborn’s lead designer, comments:
“Infinite metal production and vertical water transport were among the top requested features so including them in the first big patch was a no-brainer. But since there was a lot more content to this update, we launched the game’s experimental branch to test it there first. It was a good call, as evidenced by the number of tweaks we made to water physics alone. We’re lucky to have the kind of players that are as creative as they are hell-bent on breaking the game. Inventing a beaver Perpetuum mobile was the first thing they tried with the new pump and water wheels.”
Timberborn was released into Early Access on September 15, 2021, selling over 130.000 copies in the first week and maintaining 95% positive Steam reviews ever since. The game is now available for PC and Mac via Steam, GOG.com, and Epic Games Store. As part of the platforms’ winter sales, the game can be purchased with a 20% discount for the first time.
Timberborn Update 1 highlights
- Infinite metal production chain: Underground Ruins, Mines, Smelters
- Mechanical Water Pumps that transport water vertically, new water wheels
- New workplaces: Tapper's Shack, Aquatic Farmhouse, Wood Workshop
- New attractions (Lido, Mud Bath, Shrine), new science building (Observatory)
- Harvestable aquatic plants (cattail, spadderdock), new trees (chestnut trees)
- Additional goods (pine resin, maple syrup) and new recipes

- Dry seasons – beavers need to irrigate the land to keep fields and forests alive even when the droughts hit. They use pumps, irrigation towers, reservoirs and more.
- Vertical architecture – buildings are stacked atop one another, allowing the player to create tall megastructures or vast cities spanned by platforms and bridges.
- Lumberpunk – the beavers build sophisticated machinery, use dynamite, and scavenge human ruins for resources.
- Running a living settlement: with individually simulated units, day-and-night cycles, and district mechanics, the player maintains a truly advanced wood-chewing colony.
