Project Makeover first game in years to break into top 5 of Match3 puzzle games on iOS charts

GameRefinery by Vungle has released a report on Match3 mobile games

GameRefinery has released an updated report looking at the Match3 subgenre in the US iOS market, including market share, player motivations and shifts in genre trends.
Some highlights of the report include:

  • Match3 remains one of the most successful genres in mobile gaming and brings in 16% of all US iOS revenue, making it the biggest subgenre in the whole region.

  • Project Makeover is the first game in years to break into the top 5 Match3 puzzle games on iOS charts. All significant players such as Candy Crush Saga and Toy Blast have more traditional mechanics, whereas Project Makeover has an in-depth narrative and decorating meta-layer.

  • A constant stream of content is essential in keeping players engaged according to market data. Recurring live events like Candy Crush’s “Cloud Climb Event” have the most significant revenue impact alongside special rewards from live events.

  • Loss aversion is a strong motivational driver. Losing something feels worse than failing, which explains why we see more games turn to ‘“win streak” elements in their Match3 games. Different games have different methods for where these mechanics are used, varying from permanent features in the game to separate events
