Now Available the Crowdfunding Campaign for Call of the Sea: The Everhart Expedition, a role-playing campaign prequel to the award-winning Call of the Sea video game

This project, developed thanks to the collaboration between Out of the Blue and Shadowlands, is seeking support on Backerkit and is offering special discounts for the first 48 hours

On Hostile Shores, the prologue to Call of the Sea: The Everhart Expedition, is now available for free download and offers a glimpse into the art, style and layout of this campaign for The Call of Cthulhu.

April 22nd 2025, Spain - The time is now. Crowdfunding for Call of the Sea: The Everhart Expedition launches today on Backerkit, seeking support for this official campaign for Call of Cthulhu, the original Lovecraftian investigative role-playing game. The Everhart Expedition serves as both a prequel and alternate history to the award-winning Call of the Sea video game. The campaign allows you to pre-order the book now at a special price, with exclusive handouts and the opportunity to unlock additional rewards. During the first 48 hours, the first backers will receive an additional early bird discount.

This project is the result of a collaboration between two Spanish creative teams: Out of the Blue Games, the renowned studio behind the successful video games Call of the SeaAmerican Arcadia, and the upcoming The Vigilante Diaries, and Shadowlands, the publisher responsible for such acclaimed Call of Cthulhu supplements as Piel de Toro and Scions of the Dark Goddess, and who recently broke records with the RPG adaptation of Terraforming Mars, one of the most played board games in the world. The author of the campaign is Carlos Ferrer, renowned author of RPGs such as La mirada hueca (The Hollow Gaze) and El receptáculo del terror (The Vessel of Terror), and award-winning author of the game Broken Lands. It will be illustrated by Alberto Martínez Kisama.

It is already possible to get a glimpse of the game's style, art and layout with the starter scenario On Hostile Shores, available for free download in English and Spanish. There's also a fantastic actual play by the voice actors of the original video game, with a spectacular gaming table at the HP Lovecraft Historical Society in Los Angeles.

As in Call of the Sea, we return to a particular Pacific island full of secrets in search of a cure for Norah Everhart's strange illness. But this time, Norah will be traveling with the expedition assembled by her husband, Harry, and we will have the opportunity to explore the story from the beginning, as the group begins its journey in Boston, with all the freedom of tabletop roleplaying.

Fours ways to join the crowdfunding

For people who want to support the Call of the Sea: Everhart Expedition crowdfunding on Backerkit, there are four options available:

  • Digital Call: Access to the book and PDF game guides, as well as any digital rewards unlocked during the crowdfunding.
  • Call of the Sea: The campaign book in physical and PDF format, and the rest of the rewards in digital format.
  • Norah: Deluxe edition of the Campaign Book, boxed, with all character cards and game aids in physical and digital format. And, of course, all rewards unlocked.
  • All-In: The option for those who want it all. It includes everything in the previous level plus Norah’s Dirary, the physical edition of ‘On hostile shores’ and a card deck with every PC and NPC included in the campaign.

Materials to be produced for The Everhart Expedition include physical puzzles and maps, documents, diary fragments and images that will enhance the immersion of the investigators, and an adaptation of the video game's soundtrack by its original author, Eduardo de la Iglesia.

A different Call of the Sea, for fans and newcomers

Call of the Sea: The Everhart Expedition will allow you to explore the prequel story from a different perspective, which you can enjoy whether you have been with Norah before or have never played the game: What would have happened if Norah Everhart had joined her husband Harry's expedition instead of following in his footsteps as she did in the original Call of the Sea?". Players take on the roles of Norah, Harry, and the other members of the expedition, and the freedom of role-playing allows each group to find their own answers to this question. Yes, we will eventually reach a strange Pacific island east of Otaheite, full of mysteries, dangers, and secrets that not everyone will survive. But it will be our choices, smarts, and luck that will determine what happens in the end. There will be links and nods between Call of the Sea and its predecessor, but it is not necessary to have played the original game to enjoy the upcoming role-playing campaign.

Call of the Sea, the original video game, has won the ING Award for Best Xbox Exclusive Game in 2020 and has been nominated at the BAFTAs for Best Debut Game, among other awards and mentions at GameKult, Hobby Consolas, DeVuego (winner in 7 categories!), Zapping Awards, and many others. It is a game of adventure, exploration, and puzzles, with a unique look at the Lovecraftian mythos that you will be able to enjoy now in the form of a role-playing campaign.
