GameRefinery Midcore Games Snapshot Report: July 2022

July GameRefinery Snapshot Report: Midcore Games are on the rise with the launches of Diablo Immortal and Apex Legends and a new trend of using external web stores to bypass app store fees.

 

GameRefinery, a Liftoff Company, has released its latest analysis of the US mobile games market for July 2022. The report examines the top-grossing midcore games, market share, and design features. 

 

The mobile gaming market has primarily consisted of casual and hypercasual games. However, now midcore games have risen in popularity, and many games have also been released that appeal to PC and console gamers.

  • Of the midcore games released in the past 365 days, nine currently sit in the top 200-grossing chart, whereas only three casual mobile games appear on this list.
     

  • Midcore games account for almost 37% market share of US mobile game revenue. It has grown by 1.55% between Q1/2021 and Q1/2022, making it the only genre that has grown during this period.
     

  • The midcore games with the most successful launches in the past six months are Diablo Immortal, Dislyte, and Apex Legends Mobile.
     

  • Essential design features include controls and gameplay similar to PC and console, multiple monetization streams, and constant content updates.
     

  • There is an interesting trend of midcore games implementing external web stores to bypass in-app purchase fees.
